Appointed Official Successes

VERTULIE MASSENAT

Trenton, NJ

After learning about The Citizens Campaign, she became inspired to learn how she can make a difference.  Not only did Vertulie educate herself through our classes, but she hosted a series of trainings along with local civic associations, so that community members could learn to get results on their issues.  “After taking the classes, I was appointed by Gov. Christie to serve on his Education Reform Board as the representative for the City of Trenton.”  But Vertulie didn’t stop there.  Seeing the financial crisis her City was in, & the need for environmental reforms, she spearheaded the creation of a Trenton Green Team, establishing the potential for the City to receive funding for its sustainable initiatives, & was appointed as a Green Team member in 2011.

BRUCE COOPER

Millville, NJ

For a long time Bruce just sat on the sidelines observing government and politics, but wanted to get more involved. His passion led him to straight to The Citizens Campaign, where we showed him that just like any great underdog sports movie, with the right coaching you can become a major player. In just a few weeks Bruce read our book, took our online classes, met with his mayor, and was appointed to the Zoning Board of Millville and to a vacant seat on his political party's county committee. What does Bruce think of his sudden rise into local politics? " It just goes to show you that the system works when you use it, you just have to be like Nike and Just do it!" We couldn't agree more, so we've recruited Bruce to be our Cumberland County Chair, welcome him to the team!

TOM GIBBONS

Jersey City, NJ

Tom attended the Jersey City Call to Service Summit, where he learned about the impact of the appointments process on his quality of life. He immediately submitted an application for the City's Environmental Commission and was appointed within a few months. Not long after, Tom became the Commission's Chair. Under his leadership, the Commission has formed active subcommittees to address important community issues and writes a monthly column to keep the public informed and engaged.

SHANIQUE TALIAFERRO

Trenton, NJ

After realizing that she wanted to get more involved in her community, Shanique contacted The Citizens Campaign and expressed interest issues affecting the environment, education and youth. We referred her to the newly created Green Team and it just so happened that the appointments process had recently begun.  She applied, and was appointed shortly after. "I am just an average citizen who has a passion to see my community achieve greatness and the Green Team has given me an opportunity to get involved and make a difference."

JOE ZACCARDO

Middletown, NJ

Joe Zaccardo became an Appointed Official in Monmouth County. He learned about the The Citizens Campaign from an email forwarded by a friend. He was intrigued by the information he received, about the opportunity to learn how to participate in the leadership of his community. Its something he always wanted to do, but didn't really know how to begin. He learned how to pursue appointed office using our 30 minute online class. When he was ready to apply for a board position, he got free coaching in how to effectively proceed. "I called and they gave me advice as to how to go about the first steps in getting a position. I followed the directions of the The Citizens Campaign and the rest was very easy" Joe said.
